Illustrations for the Shadow of the wind.
The first in a series of Illustrations for The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
It's probably my favourite book so it was a pleasure to illustrate, its not a live brief or anything... wish it was.
This one is called
'The Burnt Man'
And the text accompanying the image is just a block of dummy text... I don't have the right to use the actual text of the novel...

Wrapping paper patterns
Started playing with some patterns, based on sugar skulls,
This started off as a commission to design a Sugar Skull but is rapidly turning into something else, as I play with the patterns to create some wrapping paper designs...
There are several more shapes to add and there will be further variations of the pattern its self...
Any ideas?

book jackets
I've been making some book jackets, borrowing benedict mayer's expertise in lino to teach me
It has been an interesting excersise, stressful but really interesting
http://benedictmayer.blogspot.com/ if you havn't checked out his stuff then you should.
The top image was my entry for the penguin design awards, It is for Partick suskind's Perfume, the idea of the image is of Grenouille moving through the press of humanity a sinister figure, hunched over bowed under the weight of his hatred, the composition is meant to add to this feeling. the figure's around him are turning away, as though afraid of or at least made uncomfortable by him, the area above the figure's is their scent, something which Grenouille lacks. I was pretty happy with this and with the way I added colour with the typography and made the copy interact with the image.
The seconf image was something that started life as a brief at Uni but I decided to use the image I had created of a man as a monsterous beetle, for Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis and to turn the image into a book jacket. The idea of Gregor Samsa horrified by his transformation into this hideous creature and his inability to comunicate any more is conveyed in the vomit of beetles as he tries to speak. I chose to leave some of the plate tone in the vertical streaks and print the image with a red background to suggest blood / creeping dripping walls. I wanted it to give the image a claustrophobic feeling which I think I achieved.
Once again, I have Benedict to thank here for his help, He chose the font I used and helped me with the layout, couldn't have done it without you mate.... And don't worry, I havn't forgotten that I owe you that steak dinner, you can collect any time.

editorial brief
1st draft for editorial brief.
Im going to remove the chap on the bottom left of the picture or at least redraw him...
I only loosely based the picture on the photograph which originally featured in the article as it isnt actually a picture of the Slum about which the article is written.
any other thoughts?

make me a monster
Sorry it's been a while since I posted anything, I have a lot to put up and will do so in due course, in the meantime, here's one of my first ideas for my 'make me a monster' brief. I've just been playing about with the idea of what makes a monster...
This was originally an etching i did of a man rescuing a child, i wanted to see how much the image could be changed by adding a red background and making the man's eyes black..... next step maybe to add some blood round the mouth?
Im not sure how successful an image this is but it has given me an idea...............

in the meantime
I know Im meant to have posted my Alice in Wonderland stuff, I get a scanner next week.... so its coming. in the meantime Here's an image thats part of a book Im making based on my time working in Kenya and living in South Africa. I want the book to look organic and well travelled so in addition to the images I will be trying different types of binding and posting those up there as well....
Any ideas?

re: the last post
I would hasten to point out that the image below is me throwing about ideas and not something I feel is appropriate for a children's book..... damn censors
friday friday
I have a brief to do a book jacket for Alice in Wonderland, have been throwing about ideas, I've decided to do something a bit like this... Il put the designs up over the next couple of days, but Il probably do it in white on a black background... I've been working on the type as well..... I am not a fan of typography
News
I have to get to a scanner, i have lots to upload.
I am skint, so all work on flikr is available as prints for £30. Originals available on request.

Nairobi
This has been a less than perfect few weeks and Ive been feeling nostalgic. I drew this from a photograph I took while I was working in Nairobi, Mutatus....crazy. I used Acetate to make the plate instead of metal, it's soo much cheaper than copper / tin and it holds up pretty well. Only downside is you only get a few good prints before the plate deteriorates, so its a seriously limited edition.
